Ok, so here is the deal.
I seldom get all mommy up in here.
This is my place. For my life stories.
Sometimes the stories are about me being a parent, mostly they are about me being an asshole.
In fact, not a week ago, I would have written some scathing post about that ballsack of a father that creepy, Village of the Damned balloon kid has.
Or about my dad’s recent decision to conduct his daily business in denim overalls.
Or even about this old boyfriend I had that I caught in bed with a stripper named Shauna, whose entire upper lip is now just one giant, oozey herpe sore, and I am pretty sure his dick fell off.
But today, I can’t.
I’m gonna take a moment, as a mommy, to tell you…the last thing you should have to do, as a mommy, is to sit with your sick kid in a quarantined hospital room, with needles coming out of his arms. And, the only contact he has outside of his mommy is with people in scary masks and full body rubber suits, who treat him like he has the plague.
And, there are all these other kids, just like him. Equally sick. Equally miserable. Totally fucking freaking out.
And to think. If the vaccine would have been available sooner, this all could have been prevented.

Get yours.

Hang in there, babe. If you start a posse to kick her ass, let me know. I’m totally in.
Gahhh. My husband and I are both teachers, so talk about exposure. We want to get vaccinated but they are only giving them at the health department. I hate to take the whole family to hooker pimp central, but that looks like what we will be doing. I am most worried about the baby getting it. We think our 6 year old had it last week, so we are scrubbing down the house. Hope your little guy is better.
alright you knocked my ass off the fence…call doc’s office in the morning. xoxo
OK, here’s my perspective…. My 75 yr old mom had polio 50 years ago and now has a compromised immune system. She is perfectly healthy, but careful. She gets her vaccines, takes airborne every day, uses Purell, etc.. All it would take to wipe her off the planet is one parent who has chosen not to vaccinate taking their child to the grocery store the day little Bobby gets sick.
1 sick child + 1 shopping cart= 1 very sick mom.
I love my mom. I’d like her to stay around. Please vaccinate your children.
I am glad I read this, Dr’s office called today to say they have the H1N1 Nasal Vaccine in and wanted me to schedule my 3 boys in for it and I have been on the fence about whether or not to do it, I think u have just convinced me to go and get it for them before they run out….glad I read this, My youngest is 3 and it’s scary as hell. I hope your little guy feels better real soon and kicks this flu’s ass!!
OMG, I’m so sorry to hear that your son is sick. I hope he gets better soon and that the rest of your family stays healthy. So scary when our kids get sick…especially when they are so little.
We all got our regular few shots about a month ago and our doctor has a special recording to keep everyone updated on the status of the other vaccine, which I call regularly. Personally, I think any school age child should be listed in the high risk group as well. There are several kids in my sons school (high school) that have it or have had it. Stop sending your kid to school though and you get in trouble. All you can do is try to drill it into them to make sure that they are washing their hands, etc. Several people where my husband works have it too, which is just scary. Nobody in my family is in any of the priority groups to get it, so we’ll all be in the last group. I’m just hoping nobody gets sick before that.
The bitch of it is that apparently Obama is sending 10% of our supplies of the vaccine to other countries which just really pisses me off. Not that I want to see other people get this illness but why the hell are we sending 10% of what we obviously don’t have to other people? If we had plenty of it, then go for it! But let our people get vaccinated before you go giving the shit away.
Also, and I hate to be that bitch that argues with people on someone else’s website, but the small portion of the vaccine that’s being sent over to other countries is primarily so that they can replicate it and make their own vaccines. Thus, exponentially more people will be protected, and the virus will stand less of a chance of mutating in some foreign country somewhere and then migrating back over here to start killing people in earnest. And I’m pretty sure that wasn’t Obama who made that call, but the department of health and human services. But hey? Who am I to insist on those pesky facts, when speculation is JUST AS GOOD.
Well the article that I read about it was entitled “Obama to send 10% of H1N1 Vaccine”. Regardless, my beef was not that it was Obama making the call but rather that we don’t have much of the vaccine to begin with….WHOEVER made the call. We are to start shipping it out when we have received only 16% of our original order. Sure, they may have good reasons but my family will be last in the line to get any vaccine for it and when they say that 46% of people getting this flu are otherwise healthy and one son and my husband are being exposed to it on a fairly regular basis …yeah makes me a bit nervous to think that maybe some part of that shipment that goes out could have been used for at least the two of them, if not the rest of my family. Sorry that bothers you.
Doesn’t bother me that you feel that way, just that people are so angry about things that they don’t fully understand. And that’s not your fault, but the fault of selective information dissemination on public forums (i.e. Fox news).
As I mentioned in my comment, my husband’s an Air Force immunologist, so I am fortunate (or unfortunate, I guess
to hear the whole story on these viruses. If we don’t help countries who travel extensively to the US begin a vaccination program, the virus has more time to mutate in those places. Eventually a superman-strength virus could develop, rendering the initial vaccinations we received pretty ineffective.
So the best protection for your family could very well be allowing a certain percentage of the vaccines to be sent overseas. Does that make sense?
The Air Force doesn’t have enough vaccines to even give one to my husband, and he’s exposed on an hourly basis. So I understand your frustration, I just know that the logic behind it is sound.
Anyway, soon they’ll be caught up and those of us who wish to be protected can get vaccinated, rendering this discussion moot.
Poor dude.
I’m so sorry it was shitty for you guys.
They have 6,000 vaccines available where I live. Unfortunately, for many people it isn’t even an option.
–>I work at a children’s hospital and the seasonal and H1N1 vaccines are mandatory for all employees. I got mine and my son has the seasonal vaccine and will get the H1N1 as soon as his doctor’s office has some in supply.
If you’re under 50, get THE FLU MIST for both. It’s a piece of cake, you breath normally, no shot, no needles and it takes about 3 seconds and you’re finished.

Jesus Crap! I had no idea they were hospitalizing / isolating people with H1N1. It’s running rampant in my hometown (several school districts in mid MI are shut down for the week), and they’re just giving Tamiflu and telling them to stay home. So sorry you’re going through this.
We can’t get the vaccine here. Peanut is on the waiting list for the regular flu shot (because he has asthma he gets to be on the list to “maybe” get a shot when they get some in), but nobody has the H1N1 vaccine. And actually, as it stands right now, nobody even has the regular flu shot available. NOBODY.
that sucks, poor guy
I hope he gets better soon.
We don’t have the vaccine available here yet, next week we’re supposed to be able to get it, I never get flu shots but this one we are all getting.
Judy sent me over from Twitter to offer a hug and prayer. I hope your little guy gets better very soon. We don’t have the vaccine available here. Maybe I should rethink that plane flight next week.
I’m sorry your sweet little man is sick.
Also? I totally *wish* I was the Shauna in this story. Dammit. Why can’t I be a herpes infested stripper. Sigh. Fingers crossed I’m a slut in my next life.
Oh, I am so sorry. My thoughts will be with him getting better soon. Big Hugs
Sweetie, I feel your pain. Son got it first and passed it to me and it took for-fucking-ever to get over it… so again, I’ll reiterate your message for the cheap seats Vaccinate Vaccinate VACCINATE you stubborn conspiracy theory people! The life you save may be yours, or your child’s or that cute neighbor kid that your kid had the playdate with. That high horse you’re sitting on isn’t gonna save you from the angry mob at someone you know’s funeral. Seriously.
Oh – I hope your little one is feeling tons better now (and that you are, too!) – this must have been so scary for your whole family!!!
Brittany,
Just remember… Bleach, it does a home good. Wipe EVERYTHING down that’s not a soft surface, including the inside of the car. I’m sorry your little man has to go through this, although now he can say he is immunized against it. Hope he’s feeling better soon! And I agree.. if you’re kid is sick, let them stay home. And that goes for sore throats, coughs, colds, fevers, etc.
And for you conspiracy theorists out there…. Do you honestly think the government is really trying to kill us this way?? I think they’ve got more efficient means than a virus. Hey, at least it’s not the 1800′s when all those people died from the regular FLU.
I’m so sorry this happened. It makes me crazy when people send their kids to school/daycare sick. We are still waiting for our pedi to get another round of flushots in…hopefully next week. Hugs and love to you guys, especially your little man
AMEN! I am so sick of people telling me that I should not have my daughter get the vaccine (she got it today-woohoo). I hope your little one gets better quickly. Poor guy.
I hope your little one gets better very soon – and that the hospital staff are kinder and gentler than they have been so far.
I just got my H1N1 today, because I am pregnant, but even so I had to drive 30 minutes to get to the office that had it in supply. And my OB would not let me wait to get it – since it is still in short supply and in her words “people are begging for it.”
All my best wishes and prayers to everyone that is fighting this right now.
Hope your little guy is on the mend as soon as possible.
Oh guys, how horrible! So sorry. Hopefully he is feeling better soon.
OH NO! I am so sorry. That lady with the mask? Total asshole.
I hope your baby has a speedy recovery!!!
OMG, how stupid are people? If you are sick, or THINK you are GETTING sick – stay the f*#k home!!!! And keep your virus incubating children home if they are coming down with something!!! It takes one asshole to shut down a school…
Sorry for you and hope he’s better soon!
***Ally
Fucking A, I was not going to get it, however no way in HELL do I ever want to be in the hospital again. I am so sorry about the punkin, that sucks balls!
I’m so sorry he’s sick – hope he’s feeling better soon.
The H1N1 vaccine question is really bothering me. My kids have had all their shots, and I think it is really important that they do. But THIS vaccine scares me. It’s all been about getting it produced and distributed fasterfasterfaster and I’m really afraid that it hasn’t had the time to be properly tested. I’m afraid to pump something into my body (or my childrens’ bodies!) that could potentially prove poisonous, and the concerns over the safety of the vaccine have not been addressed, except with sweeping one liners “it is safe”.
On the other hand, I’ve heard the virus is horrible, and if my kids caught it, I’d feel terrible that I chose not to vaccinate. Damned if I do, damned if I don’t (so what else is new in my adventures in motherhood?).
I totally agree with you on this… I just keep hearing that it isn’t that safe, and my daughter has reacted very badly to vaccines in the past. What do I do? Which has the larger risk???
Maybe I just need a large dome to put over my house for the next 6 months…
I don’t know who “Lotte” is, but she’s a screaming example of the morons who use statements like “full of toxins,” despite not knowing what that means. Yes, a vaccine is full of toxins. Live-attenuated (weakened) “toxins” or killed “toxins.” That’s what makes a vaccine, dipshit lady. And the idea is for it to STRENGTHEN your immune system against the real thing. Honestly, do some people just not attend biology in high school? Or did she go to Palin’s high school and learn about “science” like how the dinosaurs weren’t real?
Anyway, I’m so sorry your kid is sick. Bright side? When he pulls through he’ll be more protected against any future mutations than any of the kids who were or were not vaccinated.
The Air Force considers all vaccinations to fall under the category of immunology, so my husband’s clinic administers most of the vaccines. The problem isn’t that the government is hiding vaccines, or that they didn’t move fast enough, but that the virus itself is a slow-grower. It literally isn’t replicating fast enough to get adequate vaccines out there for people who want it. They actually put it together commendably quickly for being the government, it’s just organically incapable of being reproduced fast enough for the demand.
Anyway, our prayers are with your little fella. Hope he feels better.
Please find out more about the flu vaccine before you start screaming about “morons.” The flu vaccine contains thimersol – a mercury based TOXIN. It is used to preserve the vaccine. I don’t know about you but I am in the habit of injecting myself, my baby or my unborn fetus with TOXINS. I agree that the flu is scary and I am taking precautions against it. But I refuse to allow anyone for any reason to inject my family with mercury. The amount in one dose (let alone two doses (regular and H1N1) is up to 100 times the FDA allowed daily dosage (depending on the person’s weight) When you receive this vaccine you are protecting yourself against a few strains of flu but you are also poisoning yourself with mercury. You can download the vaccine inserts and read them to see what is in the vaccine. Read carefully and you will see that the makers of these vaccine do NOT recommend them for babies or pregnant women. I am not a conspiracy theorist or a nut, it is all there for you in black and white. Read the facts! I have no problem with the idea of vaccine – they are crucial but I do take issue with the mercury in them.
I absolutely encourage debate, and I appreciate BOTH of your comments. I do want to point out, however, that the nasal mist version of the H1N1 vaccine does NOT contain thimerosal.
You are right. However, they do not offer that for infants…
. I hope your family is doing ok during this hard time. All of my sympathy to you and your little one.
The nasal mist version is thimerosal-free, and there are injectable single-dose syringes that are also made without thimerosal. The only function of the thimerosal is to prevent growth of bacteria that can occur when a single vial contains many doses–thus multiple needles entering the sterile vial.
And (to my knowledge) they won’t give any infant the injectable vaccine, either. Infants under 6 months are reliant on the rest of us to get vaccinated and keep them safe. Which is why it’s even more important for all of us who can receive the vaccine to do so.
We gots-ta protect sweet thangs like Gigi
@ Barefootfoodie – I’m Kristie’s husband, and I hope your son get better fast. I know it must be hard on you and your family. We’ll be keeping him and your family in our prayers.
Now, I’m sorry but…
@ the thimerosal crowd –
Some of you appear to be fans of Dr. Jenny McCarthy, well known playboy model, Baywatch actress and anti-vaccine “physician” who has helped bring to light an important fact: People are very ignorant.
I’ll be brief, because facts are easy to summarize:
1) Thimerosal is not currently used in most vaccines, and in any that DO use the substance are at levels far lower than those needed for toxicity. In influenza, which sometimes contains low levels, anyone weighing 25lbs or more cannot get a “toxic” amount. (PS – vaccines for children are required not to have thimerosal—thus the thimerosal-free vaccines available for children).
2) What is toxicity? The condition is based on the consumption of large quantities of fish ingested in the 1950-60s in Japan after toxic methylmercury was dumped into the water. However, thimerosal is based on ethyl-mercury. We apply the same safety thresholds, but the two are not the same.
3) The current quantities of thimerosal used to preserve the very few vaccines using it have been tested without evidence of causing harm in humans. But certain things have caused harm in humans: H1N1 influenza virus, for example, in 1918 when it killed 100 million people worldwide (when travel was harder than today). And that’s just one example.
Here, let’s make this easier: http://www.fda.gov – look it up.
Oh, and here’s the fun part, lotte — your family will probably do fine without the vaccine, because enough people will get it that we’ll help protect your family with our herd immunity. I hope you enjoy what we’re doing for you… we’re also the same people who paid taxes for your less-than-successful education.
Oh, and to make it easy for a reply, I wasn’t medically trained as an actress or magazine centerfold. I decided to go the “classical route” of 4 years college, 4 years medical school, 3 years teaching at academic institution as a board certified internal medicine physician followed by 2 years training as an immunology sub-specialist. So my beliefs may be suspect to the mislead teaching of hundreds of years of medical literature and research.
So very well put… thank -you for taking the time to write this.
holy WOW lady!!! you might want to get your facts straight before spewing such nonsense. any vaccine weakens the immune system. how do you think your body knows to create the antibodies to strengthen immunity??? you are at the highest risk of getting sick (whether it be from the disease you were immunized against or not) within 2 to 3 weeks of getting immunized. it’s even stated on the product inserts that come with the vaccines. read one some time. you might find it interesting. and as to the thimerisol debate, you can’t tell me what’s considered toxic and what’s not because IT’S NEVER BEEN FULLY TESTED. irregardless, they’ve replaced mercury nowadays with aluminum in most cases and either way I’m not interested in injecting any amount of heavy metals into my or my childrens’ bodies.
“irregardless”? Naw, son.
Anyway, have YOU read the pamphlets? Because I have one sitting in front of me right now. Vaccines absolutely DO NOT weaken the immune system, and that’s a silly thing to claim.
According to the packet information, there is nothing that states anything even remotely LIKE “you are at a higher risk” after you’re vaccinated.
In fact, and I’m sure my husband can explain this better, but your immune system is actually stronger right after a vaccination, due to the widespread white blood cell response systemically.
Additionally, THERE IS NO THIMEROSAL OR ALUMINUM in the single dose vaccinations, which is what they use for children. Period. That isn’t a fact I made up, it’s federal law.
You have the right to fail to protect YOUR children against possibly fatal illnesses. That’s your prerogative as their parent. But be sure to keep them home so they don’t infect others, and don’t spread misinformation to populations who may not have the wherewithal to refute you. That’s irresponsible and unethical.
Ugh. It’s astonishing how quickly rumors spread online.
excuse me for using a made up word. people got the point and I was a bit stirred up. I can’t say your response was really any more respectable. we can agree to disagree on the weakened immune system. it’s not a rumor I’ve picked up on the internet, it’s something I’ve been told by more than one medical professional. I’m sure the opinions on this vary as greatly as opinions on vaccinations themselves.
and I never said there was mercury or aluminum in every vaccine. I apologize for not clarifying but I was more referring to vaccines in general as so many had already done in previous comments. and whether aluminum is a HEAVY metal or not, I still don’t want it in our bodies. not through vaccines and not through any of the other items you mentioned. I am an informed consumer thank you very much.
I still stand by my decision not to get either flu vaccine and choose to fight the viruses off naturally. so just like I can respect your choice to vaccinate I ask that you respect mine rather than cutting me down and assuming I’m some uneducated idiot looking to infect the rest of the world with my diseased family.
I agree with what you’ve posted but you’ve totally negated all you typed because you used the word irregardless.
Also, the inserts for the vaccines are available online and you can find more information on Dr. Sears’s site regarding what is in each of the different vaccines.
Do your research, ignore the news media and make a decision for yourself and your family, folks. Not because you’re scared or because anyone tells you to.
I tried to post this yesterday and failed, but here’s a rundown:
-”irregardless”? Really??
-read the pamphlets, and you’ll find none of them say the immune system is weakened, even temporarily, by vaccination. Directly after vaccinating, the entire white blood cell system jumps into action, meaning a temporary INCREASE in immune strength.
-Again, reading the pamphlets will tell you that there is no aluminum OR thimerosal in the child vaccines.
-Aluminum is not a heavy metal
-Aluminum is present in much larger quantities through the use of buffered aspirin, tinfoil, canned foods, etc.
-I don’t care if you protect your child, but don’t expose the kid to other peoples’ children.
Actually, there IS thimerosal in seasonal and H1N1 vaccinations, this is why you MUST ask your practitioner or whomever administers the vax for a “single draw” rather than receiving your vax from a multiple dose vial. Thimerosal is a preservative for the multiple dose vial and is the type most commonly administered. AND, on top of that, many administering the vaxes are not aware that there is a type of vax without the additive.
I’m currently 32 weeks pregnant and was given a single draw dose of the seasonal flu vax but know many pregnant women (and mothers of small children) who were not aware (nor were they told) that they could get a vax minus Thimerosal.
So yes, they do exist. You just need to be an educated consumer and ask for what you want.
uh yeah, irregardless, woops. I was a bit riled up at the time.
Brittany, I am so sorry. Hoping your sweet baby is feeling much better soon.
I have been in a panic waiting for my ped to get the vaccine and they finally have it. Thank God.
And the mom with the mask on picking up her infected child? Should be forced to clean out bedpans with her bare hands for the next three months.
I tried to comment twice the other day and I think it got eaten both times!
The gist of it was:
1. Agree with you 1000% about the vaccinations
2. Hope the bumpkin is doing better.
3. Hope you were able to sneak a flask of booze in there with you!!
I am SO sorry about your little boy. I know, firsthand, how awful it is to have a child in the hospital in that situation. I also hope that the rest of you can avoid H1N1 and that your family life can be back to normal ASAP.
I have to say something about all the pitchfork wielding in the comments here, and especially the comment “parents who don’t vaccinate should be shot.” Really? I think it’s important for everyone to know that, while there may be “wackos/fanatics” ON BOTH SIDES OF THE FENCE, there are many, MANY parents who are very well educated on this subject and who have made the decision after very careful and lengthy research and with thoughtful consideration of the information available. Take a moment to check out this post, and try to be open-minded while you read it:
http://tinyurl.com/6y7jw2
I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind. I’d just like you to thoughtfully consider a different opinion. After you’ve read it, ask yourself how much time it took to do all that research. It’s NOT a flippant decision. Studying all the research and poring over data takes a lot more time than just accepting a doctor’s (or the media’s) admonition that “it’s critical for all to be vaccinated – go get one.” That being said, I certainly know there are also plenty of parents who do the same amount of research and come to the decision TO vaccinate, and I have the utmost respect for them. I think (I hope) we’re all trying to do what is best for our kids.
As far as parents sending sick kids to school, or taking them to stores, etc?? I’m 110% with you. I can’t tell you how angry I get when I hear parents flippantly say they that their kid is sick but they sent them out anyway. They are LITERALLY putting the life of my daughter and others like her at incredible risk, at the same time they’re blatantly spreading viruses and bacteria throughout the community.
If anyone has serious questions about H1N1 specifically, I have a whole list of sources and links for data and information that I’d be glad to share. You can email me: psychmamma {at} hotmail {dot} com. Fair warning, if anyone simply responds with hate-spewing anger, I’ll casually press the delete button, so you might want to save your energy for something else.
Now, I’ll calmly sit here and wait for the pitchforks that will invariably be thrown.
Thank you. Well said….
Awesome response! And, I agree. Any parent worth their weight in Gabba needs to research the shit they expose their kids to, and I absolutely did. I also spoke to THREE doctors before making the decision to vaccinate. Unfortunately, despite my very best, complete nut job germophobe efforts, that decision was taken from me. It reminded me just how out of control I am in regards to what my children are exposed to. Seeing kids on vents, with IVs, in isolated rooms, really solidified to me, I am going to go the distance in terms of prevention.
Great post and you are totally awesome for sharing it here!
well put. unfortunately my emotions tend to get the best of me and I can only hope to be as clear-headed and concise as you.
Once again, I can hardly say it better than PsychMamma did.
No matter which side of this you are on, please remember that nobody decided lightly to vaccinate or not. Everyone is just trying to do the best they can for their family. That said, if you kid is sick: KEEP THEM HOME. Honestly, that would go much farther in halting the spread of this crap.
I am unsure if a staulker can give u a hug but ((hug)). I am so sorry that you have to go thru that. We can’t get the vac in Oklahoma as they don’t have any. I find that very scary. I am hopeful that all goes well for ya. Just remember that when you have a sick child snacks have no calories.
Thank you for bringing all this to light. I’ve been hearing the H1N1 wasn’t as bad as everyone thought; so I’m happy to hear the truth.
Wow, Brittany, I’m so sorry to hear about your little guy. I wanted to make sure to post a comment, even though I first read this a few days ago, because now I’m in the same boat – my 20-month old now has swine flu. We’re fortunate that he doesn’t have a very severe case, but it’s still important for us to share how prevalent it is – I think it’s important for everyone to realize how easily spread this flu is, and as PsychMamma and avasmommy mentioned, it’s best to keep your children home if you suspect anything at all. I sure hope your little guy is on his way to getting better. Please know you and your family are in my thoughts!
Can’t believe this is the first time I’m leaving a comment.
In Asia (i’m from Singapore) i think we’ve seen strange maladies come from every animal possible already – we had the Mad Cow disease about a decade back, there was the bird flu, then we had the SARS (apparently transmitted from cats? oh dear.) and now the Swine Flu (officially H1N1). I’ve disregarded them mostly, not quite the sort to freak out over stuff like that until I had 2 kids and i’m just working those sanitizing dispensers like there’s no tomorrow.
Hope your kid gets well soon and sorry to hear about the vaccine – I’ll be pissed off too if I were you. Stay sane, this time will pass.
I’m so sorry. Must suck.
But THANK YOU SO MUCH for joining the voices saying that the vaccine is ok and a good decision to make (speaking as someone with a whole family of doctors), for your health and that of the more vulnerable others in our population.
Oh, man, I’m sorry Brit. I hope he’s doing better!
Oh sweetie, my heart breaks for you. Nothing worse in the world than feeling helpless when your child is sick.
They stopped testing for it in Australia months ago. Just got out of hand. At first they were quarantining people and then they were all ‘well it might be swine flu, go to the hospital if you get worse’
Vaccine came a little late here.
We just went to the health dept this morning to get our nasal mist vax. They were very organized–we were in & out of there quickly.
I’m so sorry to hear that your little one is sick–hope he feels better soon!
That sucks! I am sorry.
This is ONE of the reasons that I am so terrified to have children…What if something is broke, and I can’t fix it?
I wish you strength and power!
Oh no! I am so sorry he got this nasty thing.
I work in a hospital, and this last weekend I got pulled from my normal unit to work in Peds. There is NOTHING worse than sick kids. It was absolutely heartbreaking to see and it really helped sway my decision. I have a 2yr old and a 9m old, and I am terrified of them getting this nasty nasty virus.
Too bad they haven’t even been able to get their seasonal flu shot. I have been calling everyone for weeks. I can’t find them anywhere.
I hope everyone is feeling better.
I thought of you guys while we stood in line for 2 hours for our vaccine. I’ve now named myself and my blog the athority on the H1N1 vaccine. I mean, if people can claim it’s made by meth heads out of dead goat bodies, I can claim to be the Swine Flu Czar, right?
Oh, shit, I am so sorry. I hope that he’s okay sooner than later. My thoughts are going out to you and yours.
You are in my thoughts.
I’m so sorry Brittany and I hope your son is already on the mend. how miserable for both of you.
I respect anybody’s decision to vaccinate or not (or partake or refuse any medical “treatment” for that matter), as long as it’s an educated decision. I cannot however respect the ignorant, judgmental, closed-minded, overly generalized mud-slinging aimed at those of us who choose not to vaccinate. who are any of you (referring to commenters, not you directly Brittany) to decide that someone who chooses not to vaccinate is some idiot whackadoo? how do you know there’s not a medical reason or a religious one or a very well researched personal one? and let’s not forget that vaccines don’t guarantee immunity either. vaccinated or not, I opt to keep my family home when any of us show signs of being ill and I think that’s the best any of us can do. that woman at your son’s school is the one who deserves to be shot.
I hope he is feeling better and at home recuperating now. You must have felt so helpless…
Do you have the vaccine there? We don’ t here and the only place that will eventually get it is the health department so I haven’t even gotten to decide if we’ll get it or not.
As I write this, I see that it is several days since your post and I can only hope that things are looking up.
My husband is just getting over the swine flu and I had to play “keep away” with our son while wearing masks and sanitizing like crazy.
It is a terrible illness that wreaks havoc on the body. The vaccine is also scary to some parents for various reasons. One thing is for certain, though. KEEP YOUR SICK KIDS AT HOME!
Don’t you dare risk the health of my family because you didn’t want to bother keeping your kid home. I will kick you in the face.
*love and hugs*
Gee, I might be the only one on this thread who is actually giving people the H1N1 vaccine as my occupation is a public health nurse. Having studied the correct literature from the chief medical officers and actually reconstituted, drawn up and given in to my clients all day, including my daughter and myself I can say with certainty that this vaccine is no different than the flu vaccine given any other year. It’s the same formula, just a different virus that has been killed and split into a million different pieces. split attenuated virus. Three new viruses are added to the flu shot every season, the three strains that are anticipated to be predominant in the season. These vaccine makers know what they’re doing. Vaccines have saved more lives than any other medical intervention in history, small pox anyone ? I consider vaccines to be safer than Tylenol. There are VERY few reactions and the benefits far outweigh the risks. The WHO finally closed the books on any correlation between thimerosal and autism in 2009. The book is closed, every exhaustive study has found no link between the administration of thimerosal of vaccine and the onset of autism.
Thimerosal is a non-toxic form of mercury, there is approximately 5 ug of it in the vaccine, about ten times less than the dose that you would get from your can of tuna you might have used to make your lunch today. That is a fact.
With every medical intervention one contemplates, it’s always risk vs. benefit. Is it good to question, yes. But do get the right information from the right sources and then make an informed decision. Most of the information out there is heresay, speculation or a complete fallacy. I find it odd that so many people think they are health professionals because they read an article on the internet, I’m a health professional and do not claim to be a professional in any other field, why is that people don’t think 4 years of university, a degree and 5 years of experience giving vaccinations means that I would know more about this subject that the average Joe. I have the monogram for the vaccine sitting in my lap.
We as a generation take that fact that we don’t typically die from acute diseases anymore for granted, however, that reality was very different for the population just 50 years ago, 50′s polio outbreak ? Don’t let you or your loved ones die or get seriously ill from something that is PREVENTABLE. It’s just common sense. (I received mine earlier today and so far nothing has fallen off my body, I swear) Seriously, I feel fine and relieved that my loved one and I are protected, a 13 year old in our community just passed away, I don’t his mother would hesitate if asked whether or not little ones whould be immunized.
Oh golly, I hope he’s better by now and that you are all well.
I am SO sorry. This post brought a chill to my body, and tears to my eyes . I hope your little one goes home soon. I hope this whole stupid horrible and horrific flu goes away soon and never comes back. I have thought of nothing BUT this issue for days on end now. My city has been hit hard with this, and I was having issues with the vaccine. However, I am more than sure I am getting my boys and myself vaccinated. Here in Canada, we only have the adjuvant vaccine, with thimerosal, but apparently, it’s safe – and nothing to worry about. I do have my worries, but eh. The flu is MUCH WORSE a scenario. My oldest son had a very bad case of pheumonia last year. He was in the children’s hospital for 2 weeks, and needed surgery to drain fluid from his lung. He had a chest tube in him for 4 days. He was on an oxygen mask, and on a MORPHINE drip. Along with all the other meds going through his IV. Countless x-rays, ultrasounds and even a C/T scan. NIGHTMARE of my LIFE. I have never fully recovered after that. So… I know and feel what you’re going through. And I hope he gets better fast. There is nothing worse than seeing your child sick in the hospital, and seeing other sick children, too. I’m sorry. It sucks . And thank you for this post. Very important. xoxo Take care.
